Hula hooping is a perfect cardiovascular exercise, burns calories and tones muscles (especially abs). It is simple to learn and can be used by adults and kids. I do recommend purchasing a "weighted" hula hoop and not one you purchase at a toy store, because it's so light that it won't produce much toning effects nor a proper workout.
You also don't need to go to a gym to get a great workout from a hula hoop. You can enjoy it at home, beach, park or where ever there is open space.
Me and my nieces use to hula together all the time and had a blast. It gets the blood flowing, but it does feel a little silly at first because it takes some coordination to get started but in time it becomes very easy and effortless.
